A Coronavirus COVID-19 Survival Guide: Healthy Tips for Protecting Yourself

Coronavirus COVID-19 has taken over our lives. So whether you’re a first responder, a teleworker, or a retiree we’re all affected. With over 14,000 cases confirmed in the United States, and 218 deaths across the country, we need to be sure to protect ourselves and our communities.

So to keep you informed, here are a few facts and survival tips.

The Facts

What is COVID-19?

According to the Centers for Disease Control a novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus COVID-19?

Current symptoms reported for patients with COVID-19 have included mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

How is it transmitted?

The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.

Survival Tips

  • Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitize (Must be at least 60% alcohol).
  • Try not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth and stay at least three feet AWAY from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Use your knuckles to press buttons and your sleeves to open doors.
  • Cover mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
